Any options for affordable rental cars for a single day in Zurich?

A friend and I are hoping to rent a car for one day, departing from and returning to Zurich. But we seem to have waited a little too long and rental costs for a single day jumped from $70 to $170. Are there any secrets to finding an affordable car for a single day there?

Thanks in advance!

Where do you want to go? Given the excellent public transportation in Switzerland, maybe you don't really need one.

Hoping to go from Zurich to St. Gallen, then Vaduz. Doable by train but very difficult all in one day!

Well, I don't know what you have planned at each of these, but it is 1 hour from Zurich to St Gallen with departures every 30 minutes, and slower trains at other times. Figure 1 1/2 hours on to Vaduz, then 1 1/2 to 2 hours back to Zurich. Seems like that would give you 4 hours in each town and back at a decent hour.

I hope your reason to visit Vaduz is not just to get a bogus passport stamp. There is a whole lot of nothing there otherwise.

Full fare tickets for 2 people with that itinerary would run about 200 CHF, so maybe that $170 rental car is not too bad. Add fuel and parking and it might be a wash. You could look at Saver Day Passes and depending on the date, might be some savings there.

That sounds very workable. My friend really wants to go to Vaduz and I'm happy to go. Don't expect much except Alpine scenery.

Assuming you need an automatic, prices seem to be lower at the airport rather than in the city.

have you tried any of the European companies - maybe Sixt?

I agree by the way - lower your expectations for Vaduz. There is a decent McDonalds there.

Maybe a trial subscription for www.mobility.ch could work?
Largest vehicle-sharing scheme in Switzerland. They have electric cars, as well as gas-powered. I don't know what's involved in joining, but the website says you don't need to be a Swiss resident.
