Another Swiss Travel Pass question.....7 nights in Switzerland

I've tried to figure this out by pricing all the train routes we're going to take, but it just isn't clear to me what to do with boat rides/funiculars/ scenic train rides planned. I was hoping it might be obvious to the experts here. I'm not sure whether to get a first or second class pass, and for how many days. Anyone have any ideas?

Day 1, train Zurich- Luzern
Day 2, boat ride in Luzern
Day 3, Luzern to Montreux , Golden Pass first class seats. Then return regular train, first class seats.
Day 4, Luzern to Murren
Day 5-6 mountain funiculars
Day 7 Murren to Zurich

On one hand, an 8 day pass would be convenient, but kind of a waste
Maybe a 3 or 4 day pass? I guess I'm not sure if it's worth having a day used just for the 50% discount on the funiculars. Or if they make you use a day for that discount. I know we want to use it on day 3, but I'm not sure what other days would be worth using it for.

If you are considering the Swiss Travel pass version with 3 select days (or some other number), then yes, using it to get a discount on the high mountain rides would consume a day on your pass. I would narrow your focus to either the Half-Fare Card or the 8-day Swiss Travel Pass, second class. The former usually is the more economical one but the latter has more convenience and perks.

Thank you for the response! I was thinking of doing the first class pass just because we wanted to ride first class that the one day from Luzern to Montreux and back via the Golden Pass and regular train. But perhaps it would just be cheaper to upgrade those legs individually.

Yikes, that is not good to have to use a pass day just to get 50% off on the mountain rides.

What do you mean by "mountain funiculars"? In addition to a boat ride on Lake Lucern, an excursion to Mt. Pilatus could be fully covered, as could most museums. The route from Muerren to Lauterbrunnen is cheap but from Muerren to the top of Schilthorn or across the valley to Kleine Scheidegg or (especially) Jungfraujoch are not. I agree that you should be choosing between either the Half-Fare Card or the 8-day consecutive Swiss Travel Pass in second class. The extra coverage would certainly pay off versus a 4-day flexipass.

If you're choosing first class for the Golden Pass in order to try to book the VIP nose cone seats, then you can only do that on the Montreux-Zweisimmen leg of the train. Check availability at http://www.mob.ch/en/reservation-procedure. You can pay the 2nd-to-1st upgrade fee in the station, if they don't offer it as part of this transaction.

On day 8, the pass would also cover the otherwise-cheap train between Zurich and the airport.

Thank you! I think you pinned down exactly what we should do regarding the train. Though honestly we haven't determined what the "cannot miss" things to do in Lucerne, Murren and Montreux are yet, I'm sure I'll find them in this forum.

Sounds like the eight day second class pass, so we don't have to hassle with anything is our best option. We already have reservations for that one leg you mentioned, now we just have to figure out if it's worth it to reserve and upgrade the other two (late May).

Thanks!

You don't "have" to return to Lucerne on the Golden Pass...you can actually take the GP from Montreux to Interlaken Ost and change trains for the 20 minute train ride to Lauterbrunnen. From there it's just a few minutes up the mountain to Murren.
