Annecy and Chamonix vs Lausanne and Montreux

Looking for opinions on itinerary! My husband and I are booked for 4 nights in Murren the first week in August. We are trying to put together a plan for what to do in front of Murren. We are flexible, but are looking at perhaps a trip of 10-12 days. Considering several options:

  • Fly into Geneva and take a train immediately to....???
  1. Annecy France for 2-3 days, then on to Chamonix for 2 days, then to Murren for 4, then Zurich for an overnight before flying home Or
  2. Lausanne or Montreux for 2-3 days, then on to Murren for 4, then ?

Appenzell looks very appealing to me, but I realize it is not in the general area as the above...If we try to see Appenzell, I'd like to see that area first since I'm thinking the Murren area will be the most beautiful...

We will not have a car. All of our travel will be by train.
Advice and opinions are needed!

Since you are headed to the Alps in Murren, I would stay in Annecy 2 nights and Lausanne or Montreux 2 nights and the rest of the time in Murren and Luzern. I would save Chamonix for another time. Appenzell in my opinion is too far out of the way to give up your other location choices. Enjoy.

I would skip Annecy at that time of year as it will be ungodly crowded, especially on a weekend. Chamonix was much better even hough to too was crowded.

Personally, I would fly into Geneva (spend a night) head to Chamonix for 3-4 days and then Murren area for 4-5. This may be mountain heavy but I am a mountain guy!
