Do they sell canned oxygen in Murrin Switzerland?
The altitude in Murren itself is not super high, so actual altitude sickness is perhaps not an issue, although of course everyone reacts differently. I have taken Diamox successfully for trips to Peru and Ecuador, so you might check with your MD about doing that if you have concerns.
Mürren is at 5374 ft.
Most people have no a!titude issues at that altitude. I'm a lowlander and only start noticing anything at 8,000 ft. Of course, YMMV.
Just a bit higher than Albuquerque.
Switzerland, while scenic, is not that high. The Alps end where the Andes and Himalayas start. I don’t think you’ll have a problem where you’re going.
Yes, most would be okay in murren. It might however bother you if you go up to a place like Schilthorn, which is about ten thousand.
john,
As the others have mentioned, you shouldn't have any altitude problems in Mürren as it's not at an extremely high level. If you're planning to also visit the Schilthorn and Piz Gloria, it's at about 10K ft. and you might have more of an issue there. I've visited both of those locations many times and never had any issues.
However if you're planning to visit the Jungfraujoch, it's at about 11,360 ft. and you may have issues there. I was able to manage a visit there but found that I found that I was moving slower than usual, and climbing stairs especially was more of an effort.
It's difficult to provide specific answers on a travel forum, as none of us have information on your history. If you have concerns about elevation issues during travel, it would be a good idea to have a chat with your family physician as h/she would have more comprehensive information on your medical details.
I live at an altitude of about 1250 ft. and have absolutely no problems in Mürren.
You don’t need canned oxygen in Mürren and no, they don’t sell it. The altitude there is less than the pressurized cabin of the airplane you take to get there.
commercial aircraft are typically pressurized to 8,000 feet which is thinner than Mürren.
Do you have trouble flying?
Unnecessary. The only place I ever felt the effects of altitude was at l'Aiguille du Midi (13,000 feet) and that was more giddiness, not illness. Murren is at 5,000 feet - think Denver.
I've never had altitude problems before, but over the last couple of years I find extended high-altitude to be a challenge. (Aging is an adventure! ) I, too, am concerned about the altitude. I can go up the mountain to Jungfrauhoch for a few hours but I have to sleep lower to let my body replenish. Otherwise I feel lethargic and flu-like. Not what I want for a trip.
Possibly buy it before Murren? Or I'm considering lodging in Wengen which is 1,000 feet lower than Murren.
Activity at higher elevation and elevation change on foot can be challenging for a “flatlander.” We live at about 200’ above sea level and it takes a couple of days of hiking to get used to being at 5000’ or more, especially when we walk uphill a few hundred feet.
Obviously, the OP should check with their doctor if they experience altitude sickness at approximately 5,000 feet (which is not the norm) and want to visit Murren.
