We will be ending a river cruise in Basel. Looking for suggestions for an excursion of a few days to the alps (my husband has never been to Switzerland before). I'm somewhat mobility impaired (walk with a cane, can't walk long distances)---so no suggestions for alpine hikes for me lol :) I just want to give him a flavor of the alps for a few days.
A stunning area is the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the three villages of Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Mürren. It is about 2.5 hours from Basel to Lauterbrunnen by train and a little more time to the other villages. I suggest you get your hands on the Rick Steves Switzerland guide book as he does a fabulous job explaining the area and the logistics. It can be VERY popular so getting lodging settles ASAP is advisable. When is your trip?

Lauterbrunnen has a funicular to the top of the steep valley wall and a small train line along the valley wall to Murren which could benefit a somewhat mobility impaired visitor. RS covers this area very well. The view along the valley from the train is spectacular and of course, you can ride it back to the funicular and then back down into town.
