We would like to do a train trip through the Alps leaving from Chur, and returning the same day. I am a little confused with the various possibilities. I am hoping someone in the Rick Steves community can help with ideas. Thankyou for any suggestions.
A round trip on the Bernina Express might fit the bill. 4 hours to Tirano, Italy, 2 hours there for lunch, 4 hours back. The railway itself is a Unesco World Heritage site. Be sure to do it on a nice day. Departs about 9 am and back about 7 pm.
I agree with Sam. The Bernina Express would be a great day trip. You could take the "official" B.E. scenic cars one way, and then return via the "regular" trains. If you want to visit some posh locations, Davos and St. Moritz should also be a fairly easy trip from Chur.
