Älplerfest in Lenk im Simmental

Has anybody been to this festival? (Oct. 11 this year)
I'll be travelling in France the first two weeks of October and think this might be worth a detour. Tips on local accommodations and best rail route are welcome.
For example: would Lyon > Montreux > Lenk be feasible?
Thanks!

Yes, my wife and I have been to that festival. It was great fun. We stayed at the hotel Alpenruh, very nice hotel. We had a room with a balcony overlooking the street. That came in handy. There is live music, a big food tent, and lots of street vendors. The main event, of course, is all the highly decorated cows and other animals parading through town in a big loop. Very fun to watch and cheer them on. We paid a small amount to inspect the contestants in the town square and then vote for "Miss Lenk". We had no problem not having a car, easy to walk around. You take a train to Zweissimmen, and then another train up the Simmental Valley to Lenk. The bahnhof is close to the center of town.

Lenk was my first Alpabfahrt several years ago, after 9 previous trips to Switzerland.
It is a small town, and it snowed (slushy ) that morning, making for a magical, intimate experience. I had lunch "with the locals" at a cafe a bit up the hill, and enjoyed the experience immensely!
Unfortunately, I will miss it this year!
