Seeking hiking base(s) for early August. Having hiked in the Alps numerous times, I know weather can change within minutes. I'm wondering if any of these areas might be more reliably sunny in early August: Zermatt, Bettmeralp, Kanderstag. (Don't wish to be based in BO or Chamonix on this trip, as have done lots of hiking in both areas.) With 5-6 nights figured we would base ourselves in one or two of these places. Enjoy moderate to semi-difficult day hikes. Flying in and out of Geneva, which can't be changed. Will have a Eurail pass as we are going to a number of countries on this trip. Appreciate advice!
Why not opt for Tyrol country in the Austrian alps. Train to Innsbruck from Geneva then head to the alps. Visit or base yourself in villages like Seefeld, Alpbach, Igls, Kirchberg, and Zell-am-See.
It's over a 6-hour train ride just to Innsbruck, which effectively would cut out 2 of our 5 days of hiking. Looking to be within 3+ hours of Geneva airport. Should have specified that!
Isn't Kandersteg in the BO? You can also look at Gstaad, on the west limits of the BO and 2.5 hrs from Geneva.
Also areas around Les Diablerets or Villars.
