Thank you for the tip on the cow parade in Wengen today. We arrived in Murren last night and I just happened to read the forum. Today my dream came true and we saw the cows come down, they were decorated with flowers, just like I’ve seen pictures of!

We just got back from the Engadine and can't wait to go to BO next September. Is there a way to plan to be there for this cow descent...Is it usually the end of September? Is this something we should try and do if we can? Sounds awesome.

The descents are normally from late August through September (even early October) depending on the region...a few places have festivals with set dates, but individual descents can vary depending on weather and other conditions, so it is hard to predict those far in advance. In the Berner Oberland, usually mid-late September - the tourist offices in Lauterbrunnen and surrounding area are well-informed and publicize the dates 1-2 weeks in advance, but you could try asking them earlier to see if they have any tips.
Fyi, for anyone going in late May-mid June, you can also see the cows going up the mountains. They aren't always 'dressed up' for the climb to their summer pastures, but it is still fun to watch them and marvel at how they can hike uphill for 3+ hours!

Carrie - yes, you have a pretty good chance! I was in Wengen this June and we saw one group going up on the 21st. A local told us this was a week or so later than normal due to the weather (we had an unseasonably cold spring). So fingers crossed your June trip will match up with next year's ascent.
