Air BnB or VRBO ok in Zurich? Day trips

I posted in an earlier thread but as I've looked at hotels I"m wondering if I need an AirBnB or VRBO since we are there an entire week. And with my son playing soccer I will need to do laundry often.
Would appreciate any advice. We will have lots of free time except for the evening soccer trainings.
I would prefer NOT to rent a car but it sounds like getting to the fields in the evenings via public transport could be challenging? So my questions are:
1 Do we get hotel or AirBnB/VRBO? Area of town that would be best?
2 Suggested day trips or specific things to do in Zurich. I KNOW we will visit the FIFA museum!

Original post:
My son will be attending soccer training in Zurich Jun 10-15. We will have spent the previous 5 days in Lauterbrunnen. He is training with YF Juventus and it appears their field is near the Familiengarten near the Altstetten area. We fly back to the USA on the 16th.
I need help with lodging suggestions? Areas of the city?
Can we take a train to the fields easily or do I need to rent a car?
Any day trips you would suggest? (I believe his training will be in the evenings)
I love visiting France especially. Germany?

I didn't reply to your previous posts, as I am not familiar with that area of Zürich. I find it hard to believe that there is any area of a Swiss city that is not reachable by public transport, including in the evenings. The Swiss would actively discourage you from driving to such events, and only plan them if reachable by public transport.
I would not rent a car. Parking would be difficult, and driving between locations in the city equally so.

As for tickets, I would look on the website of the Zürich Public Transport company (ZVV): https://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/home.html

They appear to offer a 1-day pass and multi-day passes. See here: https://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets/daypass.tab-tab.html
Note, these are not "rail passes", these are passes for all public transport in Zürich or surrounding areas.

P.S., Please remove the # from the start of the lines in your post.

Hey Chris,

Since you live in Basel, is Basel considered an ideal destination in Switzerland. I know Lucerne, Bern, Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne and Berner Oberland are popular places but I hardly see people on here write about their experiences from visiting Basel.

Chris F....I didn't explain well. My son is just doing soccer training. We aren't going to any "events" like games. He will be training with a club for a week in the evenings. In an earlier post someone suggested that the public transportation would be ending around 8 pm to that location?

That's because we keep it to ourselves!! Why share a lovely city with all sorts of attractions including a fabulous mechanical water feature and chain ferries across the river?

I have written about it here many times.

TnBlindingLights, now I see why you call yourself Blinding Lights! Putting that # at the start of lines in your question caused the print to blow up so large and bright I thought I had to go and get my sunglasses!

Yes, I know it sounds crazy Chris, but there are places where the transport is somewhat limited :) The bus stop Juchhof (closest to the sports fields) is on line 307, which doesn't run that late. These sports field are part of a large complex between a highway and multiple rail lines (I go by almost every day on the train) and this location might explain the limited service.
There are some other bus stops in the area on the other side of the tracks in Schlieren, but I don't see any that would not involve at least 10-15 mins walk, depending on the exact field. Doable, but maybe not ideal - I haven't done the walk myself. That's why I suggested contacting the football club and asking about training times - perhaps they also have advice about transportation options?
