Staying in Geneva for a few days in early May, and hotel and rentals prices are very very expensive. Are there options or places within a short train or bus commute from downtown Geneva that make hotel prices a bit more acceptable?

Annemasse France? 20 minutes by train from Cornavin Station, or 35 minutes by tram.

Excellent insight, Sam! Looking into this now... 20 minutes by train is more than reasonable. :)

There is Ibis I used once, closer to the airport than the centre of the city, but just 5 minutes from either, that as I remember was quite reasonable. Not fancy but clean, nice, decent breakfast.
