Hi!
Has anyone heard if the Aescher House is permanently closed? If so, any suggestions on your favorite areas of food or stops to hit in Appenzel area?

I take it you mean the Aescher mountain inn, on the side of Ebenalp, in Appenzell.
According to their website (here: https://www.restaurant-aescher.ch/ ):
Das Berggasthaus Aescher ist ein Saisonbetrieb.
Derzeit geschlossen
Offen von Mai - November 2019 (sofern Schneeverhältnisse erlauben)
"The Aescher mountain Inn is seasonal. Currently closed. Open from May to November 2019 (as soon as the snow conditions allow)."

Aescher House is permanently closed until May. Try restaurants Gass 17 and Restaurant Hof.
