Advice on itinerary so far is needed!

We are traveling to Switzerland after a cruise in May 2026. Late 50’s, fit and love to hike and e-bike. We spent time in Switzerland a few years ago and thrilled to be headed back.
However we are having trouble deciding our itinerary as the weather can be so tricky. Would love some advice.
Here is our plan so far:
1. Leave Salzburg on 5th to Chur to spend night and catch Glacier Express to Zermatt on 6th. I could skip this entirely but hubby really wants to do it so it’s staying on the plan.
2. Stay in Zermatt on 6th and if we have good weather see Matterhorn (we did Jungfraujoch last time).
***If bad weather we head to BO on 7th and find a hotel as we will spend next few nights here.

***now the big question….where to stay in BO? We stayed in a Mürren last time but it was late June. Loved it!!!! However, the weather could be dicey so we are wondering if we should stay lower in the valley to try and get some hiking in.
3. We will stay in BO nights of 8-9th (unless we add that xtra day) and head to Bern on 10th
4. Stay in Bern 10-11th and head to Zurich on 12th to fly out 13th.

*we visited Lucerne last time so that’s why we did not include it this time.

Any advice welcome. Thank you in advance.

We stayed in Wengen in mid-May 2023 and it was lovely. I would encourage you to stay 4 (8-9-10-11) nights there as you love to hike and e-bike, and use Bern as a day trip if the weather is not-cooperative with outdoor plans. Then to Zürich for the last night.

even though early May is between seasons I would be cautious about expecting to arrive at a room above Lauterbrunnen without a reservation

Absolutely! If we decide to head on to BO then we know we will probably only find a room in one of the larger cities that night. But most likely we will just stay in Zermatt and find some stuff to do there. Even staying in and relaxing is fine cause it’s Switzerland! A slow day in paradise is perfectly fine with us.
