Have you done this trip? We have looked at trains, buses, and taxi rides. What would you suggest?
You can a) drive b) take a bus c) take a private/shared shuttle d) take the train.
Driving makes no sense unless you have other uses for the car since there are
multiple other transport options.
There are multiple bus companies that serve the route: Flixbus, BlaBla Bus, and
Swisstours. Probably the cheapest option. But all buses let you off at the
Chamonix Sud bus "station".
If you have money to burn, or a multiple of 8 people, a private shuttle works.
That will be door-to-door. Shared shuttles are not always available. I say 8
people because that's how many people a minivan can hold, and the shuttle
companies will charge by the van, no matter how many people are in it.
The train is scenic, but because the track gauge changes as you head into the
mountains, there are two connections. Scenic but less attractive if you have a
lot of luggage. Also slower than the bus or shuttle. There are multiple train
stations in the valley you can potentially disembark at.
Since you didn't specify any of your own criteria or where you need to go in
Chamonix, hopefully this helps you narrow it down.
cs,
I took a "shared" shuttle from the airport in Geneva to Chamonix, but as it turned out I was the only passenger. The driver dropped me right at the door of my hotel.
They also pickup at the rail station. If I remember correctly, this is the service I used - https://www.alpytransfers.com/chamexpress?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2cvI1ebuhwMVhQutBh2oljgzEAAYASAAEgIX3fD_BwE .
For my departure trip, I used the train.
I was just travelled from Geneva airport to Chamonix on last Weds. I decided to pay a bit more for mountain drop off transfer for peace of mind. my flight to Geneva actually got delayed and they waited for me. it was a smooth and safe ride to Chamonix.
Thanks for all suggestions. We decided to book a shared shuttle van. The trains took at least twice as long and were too complicated for jet lagged brains to navigate.
