Advice on 4+ days in the Bernese Oberland

Hi everyone,

I’ll be staying in Mürren at the end of August, and I’d love your advice on this preliminary plan. The days are interchangeable depending on weather. I’m aiming to avoid rushing. I can add many more days here if needed.

Day 1 — Sunday (seems rushed)

Start the day at Interlaken, visit Schynige Platte, do the Panorama Loop Trail, take the train to Wilderswil and then to Grindelwald, gondola up to First. Go to Mürren and check-in.

Day 2 — Monday

Early visit to Schilthorn from Mürren. Stop at Birg on the way down. Go to Allmendhubel and walk down to Mürren via the North Face Trail.

Day 3 — Tuesday (if it's a clear day)

Train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, cable car to Männlichen, Panorama Trail to Kleine Scheidegg, train up to Jungfraujoch, hike to Mönchsjochhütte.

Day 4 — Wednesday (or any other rainy day)

Lauterbrunnen Valley walk to Stechelberg. Along the way, Trümmelbach Falls, Mürrenbach Fall. Walk from Mürren to Gimmelwald.

Would you change anything? Is this too packed, or does it leave room for some flexibility? I want to enjoy the hikes and not feel rushed. Thanks a lot for any thoughts or tips!

You don't have to do and you might not do everything as planned. Just go with the flow on how you feel and not like you will never have an opportunity to visit again. I have been to the area 5 times in 8 years.

I just got back from a trip with four nights in Murren. We had what I’m told was probably the coldest day all summer and it pretty much rained that whole day. We were able to get some hiking in, but definitely had to pivot from the schedule I had in mind.

Your schedule is incredibly packed, but everything on there is awesome. I just can’t imagine you’re going to do it all. I know people move at different paces, but literally we spent a full day with the allmendhubel lift —> north face trail (including the detour to the waterfall). We stopped along the way at one of the Alpine farms and enjoyed fresh-baked treats and coffees, and capped off the visit with a very enjoyable dark beer at the Gimmelwald brewery. Before we knew it, it was evening. We all thought this was our favorite day but on paper it looks pretty boring to say we just did the Northface trail.

Makes sense! I'll keep that in mind. We do have a lot of freedom to add more days, since I'm prioritizing this part of the trip. Any other days that jump out to you as being too rushed?

Skip staying in Interlaken the day before. Any supposed time you “save” by staying in Interlaken is eaten up by the logistics of having to deal with another hotel.

Luzern > Murren (optional boat ride from Brienz to Interlaken on the way)

Options to chose from that are realistic in a day....

1 day - Schilthorn, Birg, Allmendhubel, Northface hike

1 day - Schynige Platte + Panoramaweg Daube Oberberghorn Laucherhorn

1 day - Mannlichen/Kleine Scheidegg/Jungfraujoch/Wengen

1 day - Grindelwald First + Bachalpsee

1 day - Lauterbrunnen Valley for your rainiest day

1 day - weather buffer or Lake Thun cruise with castle stops at Spiez, Oberhofen & Thun
