Ok, this is driving me crazy. I've been trying to add my kid while buying the HFC so we can add the swiss family card but it kept giving me error when i entered the details of my kid in the add passenger step. Kept getting this error of : The date of birth is outside the validity range for the product selected.
How to add the swiss family card to HFC purchase?
I believe you select the free Famjily Card at a later step, and add the child’s name and birthdate there. You are not getting your child a half Fare Card.

You have to add the Swiss Family Card when you buy the Swiss Half Fare card. Anyway, all i can say it's a bug on their website. I couldn't get thru using my desktop. But I was able to add when I bought it on my mobile. There's a checkbox under kid which has to appear for you to add. When it's not shown, you will get the error.
You can always get the HFC (and add the kids) at a station in Switzerland if the website is giving you issues. You do not need to have this card till the moment you actually board your first train (or bus or whatever...)
