Lake Geneva Area 4 days in May

Hey lovely people! We opted to mix up our annual trip to Provence by moving our return flight to depart out of Geneva vs. hauling all the way back to LHR. Oddly enough, BA did not charge extra to change return so we want to make the most of it. I know it is shoulder season so not quite summer activities.

We will TGV from Avignon to Geneva on May 19 or 20 and have through the 24th. We have never been to the region and hungry for recommendations. I do have the RS Switzerland guide book, but would love input to build an itinerary - which cities are a must? Obviously Lausanne for a night or two, but where else? We will spend our last night in Geneva.

Im wondering if it is terribly unrealistic to try and make it to Zermatt and should we? We don't necessarily enjoy having to make a 3-4hr trek for 1 day/night. Is there a closer spot we could visit to get a feel for the alps?

Thank you in advance! :)

Zermatt is 3 3/4 hours from Geneva, so it is definitely realistic to make it there.
I don't see any TGVs direct to Geneva from Avignon. TGV to Lyon Part Dieu, then a TER to Geneva. Take the 7:15 or 8:48 TGVs to get to Zermatt at a decent hour.

Vevey would be a good spot to return to after Zermatt. 2 direct trains every hour to Geneva airport taking from just over 1 to 1 1/4 hours.
