adapters for electrics in switzerland

Are there different adapters needed for electronic devices in Switzerland than those used throughout the rest of Europe?

Yes, sort of different.

My RS two pin Type C adapter plug was a tight fit. We could push the adapter plug into the Swiss sockets with a little force.

The Euro Type C pins with two round pins are the correct spacing but slightly larger in diameter than the Type J Swiss plugs with three round pins.

Grounded plugs are different. The Swiss hotels I stayed at had loaner adapters for my Euro Schuko grounded plugs to the Swiss outlets.

sandy,

Just to clarify, I assume you're referring to Plug Adaptors?

The two-pin (ungrounded) Plug Adaptors used in Europe will also work in Switzerland. However, three-pin (grounded) Plug Adaptors are unique to Switzerland and can't be used in other countries in Europe.

This website should provide all the answers you need.....

(Note the offset of the center pin on the grounded model).

  • Two pin Euro-plugs (sometimes called "type C", click for photo) do fit in Swiss sockets, provided they have the correct bevel edges (some adaptors are the wrong shape). They Are the same size pins.
  • German Schuko plugs (also known as "type F", click for photo). DO NOT fit. The pins are too big. You may be able to force it in, but if you do you may break the socket, and you will not have the necessary earth connection.
  • If your appliance needs an earth connections (and many like phone chargers do not), make sure you have a proper Swiss adapter, with 3 round pins on it (click for photo).

You will need a Swiss adapter. I purchased mine at a Coop store in Appenzell for about 7 chf. Bring your European adapter along as well as it will fit into the Swiss adapter and your American plug will fit into the Europe adapter. They all fit together. Whew!
