A week in Switzerland

Hi! I have done European travel before but Switzerland is a whole new place for me. I am going on a trip with my parents and we are trying to hike as much as possible but am feeling overwhelmed. We are flying into Zurich but I am torn between going Bern (spend the night there) - Interlaken (for two days) - Lucerne (for two days) and adding another town or making somewhere our home base and doing day trips. We are planning a week in Switzerland before heading to Vienna (planning to fly to save the 7 hours on the train).

Any advice is helpful!

If you are looking to hike as much as possible, I would skip Bern and go beyond Interlaken up into the mountains--stay at least four nights, then end in one of the cities with flights to Vienna.
Lucerne is close to Zurich so many stay there when flying out of Zurich, and you can do some day trips to hike, but there is nothing like being up there and just setting off on a trail. Murren and Wengen are very popular here but there are plenty of other villages.
Month is important though, please add!

I am going in August! We really want to be near the hikes so maybe a small village is better.

I'd suggest going straight to the Berner Oberland, and staying IN the Alps in either Murren on Wengen, car free villages, for 4-5 nights. No one is ever ready to leave.
Then spend the remaining nights in Lucerne. It's an easy commute to the Zurich airport from Lucerne..
Book lodging asap. Do your research on booking.com, and then book directly for best prices. Prepare for sticker shock, but it's so worth it. The BO is one of the most beautiful places on earth!
Safe travels!
