This will be our 1st trip to Switzerland. Would like last 3 nights in Varenna this leaves 6 nights in Switzerland. We would like to keep either 1 or 2 base in Switzerland. I was thinking head to Lucerne from Zurich spend 3 nights then to either interlaken or wengen as our base. Folks who did this kind of trip please advise on itinerary.

Easiest way is to spend 3 nights in Pontresina, then train (either Bernina Express or regular train) to Tirano and then a train to Varenna.

Unless your flight out of Milan is late in the day, spending the last night in Varenna is not usually considered a good idea.

We are going beginning of September. Our flight out of Milan is at 11:20 am. Based on suggestions looks like it’s better we stay in Milan the night before.

You’re going to spend a lot of a day getting from Wengen to Varenna. If Varenna is non negotiable, then you have to allow for the travel day and cut out Luzern. Wengen 5 Nights, Varenna 3 Nights, Milan 1 Night. If you try to also do Luzern I think you’re just going to feel like you’re racing around the whole trip checking in and out of hotels. Alternatively if your flight arrives in Zurich early enough you could travel to Wengen via Luzern the long way and stop in Luzern for a few hours on your way to Wengen, storing your luggage at the station.
