8 nights in Switzerland in the Summer

Hi and thank you to everyone who has responded to a previous post of mine.

Based of what was suggested and some readings, I have come up with this:

Day 1 - From Geneva...head straight to Montreux
Day 2 - day trip Zermatt

  • plan to forego of Zermatt if weather not cooperating.

Day 3-5 - Berner Oberland (via golden line)
Day 6-7 Luzerne, with day trip to Bern, maybe Zurich also?
Day 8 - Geneva

We will be flying in and out of Geneva due to airfare costs...

What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Zermatt is not a day trip from Montreux if relying on public transportation. I would spend five nights in the Lauterbrunnen Valley instead of two. You’re trying to see way too much in eight nights. When visiting the alps, you need to allow an extra night in case of poor visibility. There is a lot to do and see in the Berner Oberland so don’t cut it short. This is Switzerland's best highlight.

Hi MaryPat! Thank you. Will be spending 3 nights in OB region and then maybe 4 if I will have to forego Zermatt. But yeah, you're rght, the OB region looks so amazing!

If you want to go to Zermatt (I loved it), I would suggest an overnight there, so you can go up to see the mountain either in the afternoon you arrive, or the following morning. Or both! If the weather looks promising, I think it is worthwhile.

I wouldn’t take time from the BO though. Unless you really like small cities, or the weather looks iffy, I would skip Bern and Zurich and go for the mountains instead. Luzern is lovely if you want time in a city. Montreux and the Lake Geneva region are also gorgeous.

There is so much to see, and all of it is rewarding. Pick your priorities and you won’t be disappointed.
