8 Day Itinerary for December

Planning on a trip to Switzerland on December for 8 days (including travelling in and out of the country) and would love to have an insight of my draft itinerary

Day 1 - Travelling from Milan to Luzern via The Bernina Express and will be staying overnight at the town.

Day 2 - Travelling to Interlaken and plan to tour Lake Brienz and visit the following places (Iseltwald, Brunngasse, and Brienzer Rothorn if available) and will be staying overnight

Day 3 - Travelling to Lauterbrunnen, Schilthorn, Birg Sky Walk (should we stay in town overnight?)

Day 4 - Travelling to Grindelwald via Grindelwald First (Cliff walk, Zipline/First Flyer/Mountain Carts/Scooter or Gondola), Pfingstegg, Mountain Coaster/Zipline

Day 5 - Paragliding at Lauterbrunnen?

Day 6 - Travelling to Zermatt

Day 7 - Christmas at Zermatt? (is Zermatt the best town to stay for Christmas?)

Day 8 - Travelling back to Milan

I would appreciate a guided suggestions. Thank you!

What time are you landing? Have you looked at the train schedules that this is even possible? Offhand, I doubt it.

You realize you will be at ski resorts when there. Especially in Zermatt, you may have difficulty finding lodging as it is the absolutely busiest time of the year and most places will be requiring a 7-night stay.

Hi Sam,

I haven’t really gotten into much for the time but planning on traveling early in the morning. For Zermatt there is accommodation available for a few days that’s why I don’t know if I should consider staying in Zermatt for a couple of days or should I just to a Peak2Peak day tour and stay in Interlaken or someplace else like Tasch

Well, if you have a place to stay in Zermatt for 2 nights, why not? I was there this past January, and I will be back this January with 65 friends. So i like it.

if you want the actual Bernina Express, it only goes once per day in December, departing Tirano at 2:24 pm and gets to Chur at 6:22 pm. that will put you in Luzern at 8;51 pm after a train change in Zurich. Of course, you can take regular trains instead and get to Luzern earlier.

Do you think I should skip Zermatt and spend Christmas somewhere else?

Ohh good to know about Bernina Pass. If they only depart in the evening, I might just travel via other train then so I can depart early in Milan.

Day 2 - Boats do not operate on Lake Brienz during winter, and much of what makes Brunngasse charming—the abundance of flowers—won’t be present in that season. If there’s snow, it will add a magical touch, but otherwise, it might just look like any other street with wooden houses. The Brienzer Rothorn won’t reopen until spring at the earliest.

Day 4 - Keep in mind that this area is likely to be covered in snow, especially the mountains. As a result, mountain carts and scooter rentals will probably not be available. Check the website under the “winter” section for more details.
