You can take a direct train from the Geneva airport to Lausanne (1h) and stroll through the old town.

Assuming you're traveling by train? If arriving by air, have you taken into account the time for immigration lines, transport to town and back, check-in, passport control & security lines back at the airport, etc. That could reduce 7 hours to 3.

do you have to get back to the airport? Will you have luggage? Or are you in and out of the station?

Assuming you fly into Geneva, as you are leaving the baggage area, there is a machine that will give you a free 80 minute transport ticket around town. You could use it to explore the town, or down to the lakeshore, or go over to John Calvin's church and go up the bell tower for a great view of the city.

To get back you'll need about 3 CHF to buy a return bus ticket. Bus #10 goes to the airport, and some others. You can find the bus routes here: http://www.geneva.info/public-transport/map/
