7 days trip, milan to grindelwald to zurich

Hi Everyone! I would really appreciate some help.

My family and I will be visiting Europe this holiday. I am currently purchasing the travel card which I am not sure which I should choose as we are on a budget. We are trying to explore as much as possible (Museums, boat rides, etc...) also we will have to take bus to our accommodation.

Here's my itinerary:
Day 1: Travel from Milan to Grindelwald (Accommodation @ Grindelwald)
Day 2: Day trip to Jungfraujoch (Ski-day)
Day 3: Explore Grindelwald (Grindelwald First Cliff/Picnic)
Day 4: Visit Interlaken (Sightseeing/Relaxing Day trip)
Day 5: Leave Grindelwald to Zurich in the morning (Accommodation @ Zurich)
Day 6: Explore Luzern Town (Sightseeing/Relaxing Day trip)
Day 7: Leave for the airport

Where can I book my train tickets from milan to grindelwald? From Milan, do I book an Italian train (i.e. ItaliaRail/ItaliaTren) and once I reach Zurich, I can use the SBB train to travel to Grindelwald? I am confused.

Which travel pass would you recommend? We were considering 6Day consecutive pass but I think Half Fare Card is better? Any suggestions?

Do I have to go to SBB and book my train tickets from Grindelwald to Zurich/to the destinations I am visiting?

Thank you in advance! :)

couple of questions

Day 7 which airport?

Main question - which holiday? Do you mean summer 2024?

Day 4 - what do you want to do on the flatland?

Day 5 - why do you want to go to Zurich, and then Luzern? Do you know about the direct train over the mountains to Luzern which is faster, much more scenic and direct?

Hi Nigel, thanks for the reply!

For day 7, its at zurich airport.

The holiday will be in early Jan 2024. (3 Jan to 9 Jan)

For Day 4, nothing in detail yet as I have my folks with me and also teens so im trying to find something easy for my folks while the teens can do some activities.

For Day 5, our initial plan was to stay in Luzern (from day 5 to day 7) and on Day 7 to leave for zurich airport in the morning but the folks preferred zurich as requested. hence day 6, the rest would take a train down to luzern to do some sightseeing

hope that answers! :)

You’d have to price out each potential leg to determine if the pass has monetary savings. It only does 50% up at a lot of mountain activities so things like Jungfraujoch won’t be fully covered. The main benefit of a pass is that for covered routes you don’t buy a ticket, you just get on/off those trains at your leisure. This can be really nice for flexibility with a group, as you don’t need to preplan much and you can change your mind at the last second on something. That definitely has value. Whether it will come out as a monetary savings is maybe doubtful with your list. Half Fare Card is probably the most economical, but then you will be buying tickets for each thing you do. So you may want to pay extra for convenience.

For your Milan to Grindelwald, you can purchase the whole ticket on SBB if you want. They work in cooperation with each other so that you can just pay on one site for the whole trip. You should also be able to purchase the whole thing on TrenItalia, so you can double check that prices are the same. Reminder that TrenItalia will list in Euros and SBB in Francs, so you’ll need to convert to compare.

For your other trips within Switzerland, no need to prebuy, just go on the app or to a ticket machine or window and purchase what you need when you need it.

The SBB app defaults to half fare card prices, so be aware of that when pricing out trips. If you want to know full fare, you need to double the initial price it shows.

And I’d recommend watching a YouTube video on purchasing train tickets in Switzerland. Sometimes the machines can be slightly confusing for newbies. The machines are well designed, so it’s not impossible, just nice to be prepared ahead of time.

Note that the best route for Milan airport to Grindelwald is: bus AirPort - Domodossola.
Train Domodossola- Grindelwald.

No need for lengthy and expensive detours via Milan and Zurich.
