Hi All,

We are a family of four (2 adults and 2 kids - 8 and 3 yrs old). This will be our first time visiting Switzerland and we have 7 days around last week of May or First week of June.
Here is the Itinerary we planned. Please suggest if this is good or need any modifications.
Also I heard a lot about Lauterbrunnen, not sure how to include it in our Itinerary.

Stay in Zurich - 2 days

Day 2 - Lucerne - Lucerne town and visit to Mount Rigi

Shift to Interlaken for next 5 days

Day 3 - Grindelwald - First and Bachalpsee hike

Day 4 - Montreux with Golden pass train route - Chillon castle

Day 5 - Jungfraujoch

Day 6 - Lake Brienz, Harder Kulm

Day 7 - Zermatt

Day 8 - fly out of Zurich in the morning

Thank you so much!!

Your itinerary is very day trip heavy. For example, to do the Golden Pass to Montreux and back is going to be almost 7 hours of train in one day, Jungfraujoch another 3, Zermatt, another 5, Grindelwald First another 3....You basically have 2-7 hours of train commuting every single day. With 8 days I'd narrow down your scope a bit and just enjoy the places you're going. And nix Rhine Falls & Lindt - in the grand scheme of things they're really not that great. Something like...

Day 1 - Head to Montreux from Zurich, stay 2 nights, explore town
Day 2 - Chateau de Chillon
Day 3 - Golden Pass Express to Interlaken, continue on to Wengen for 3 nights, explore Wengen
Day 4 - Jungfraujoch in the morning, Eiger Express down to Grindelwald, then First/Bachalpsee in the afternoon
Day 5 - Lauterbrunnen + Murren + Schilthorn
Day 6 - Boat ride on Lake Brienz with your luggage from Interlaken to Brienz, continue on train to Luzern in the afternoon, stay 2 nights
Day 7 - Rigi
Day 8 - Luzern > Zurich to fly out

Or if Lindt/Rhine & Zermatt are non-negotiable, then skip Montreux and do something like...
Day 1 - Head to Zermatt from Zurich, stay 2 nights, explore town
Day 2 - Zermatt/Gornergrat
Day 3 - Train to Wengen for 3 nights, explore Wengen
Day 4 - Jungfraujoch in the morning, Eiger Express down to Grindelwald, then First/Bachalpsee in the afternoon
Day 5 - Lauterbrunnen + Murren + Schilthorn
Day 6 - Boat ride on Lake Brienz with your luggage from Interlaken to Brienz, continue on train to Luzern in the afternoon (store luggage to explore), then continue on to Zurich, stay 2 nights
Day 7 - Rhine Falls/Lindt
Day 8 - Fly out

Wanderweg has given you some great suggestions.
Push the trip into June as much as possible, as many of the lifts and trails aren't open in May.
Give yourself flexibility for weather variations, especially in the Alps. You can't decide you're going to a summit until the weather forecast, the day before. Most summits have cameras, and you can decide check online that morning if it's clear. Most summits are clearer in the mornings.
Have a great trip in this beautiful country . Safe travels!

Thanks for the reply!

I liked the first itinerary that you suggested. Zurich is not a mandatory place we just wanted to cover the key places.
What are the options for travel from Wengen to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. I did some general research and did not find much.
We are focusing on using public transport so no cars on hand.
Will there be trains or busses available?
I saw a cable car from wengen to Mannlichen as an option, is that covered in bernese oberland pass by any chance?

Where did you look for travel options? The sbb.ch website or sbb app will give you the options for travel. The trains from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen run frequently. Travel in the area is very easy.

There are actually 3 ways to get from Wengen to Grindelwald.
1. Train to Lauterbrunnen, then train to Zweiluetschinen, then train to Grindelwald, That is covered by the BORP.
2. Cable car to Maennlichen, then detachable gondola to Grindelwald Terminal, then a short train or bus to Grindelwald. Covered by the BORP.
3. Train to Kleine Scheidegg, then train to Grindelwald. That is only covered by a 50% discount with the BORP.

1 & 2 take just under 1 hour. 3 takes just under 1 1/2 hours, mainly due to a 23 minute change time at Kleine Scheidegg.

Everywhere in Switzerland is heavily serviced by trains, cable cars, buses & boats. It's rare to find a place you can't get to with one of those options. As mentioned, visit sbb.ch/en (the official Swiss transportation website), type in your starting and ending place and it gives you all the connections.

To be sure, sbb will show you the fastest way at various times. If you want to go a particular way, perhaps more scenic, you have to tweak it by entering "via" points.

When I planned our trip, I used Rick Steves suggestion of a resort, an Alpine village, and a town. We flew into Zurich and took the train to Montreux on Lake Geneva for 3 nights. (In retrospect, I would have flown into Geneva - much closer). We took a day trip to Gruyère and Broc for the Callier chocolate factory. We even took a boat across Lake Geneva and had lunch in France and then spent the afternoon in Lausanne- the Olympic museum was fascinating. We took the scenic train and made our way to Murren for 2 nights; went to the Schilthorn and Gimmelwald. And then took the train to Lucerne for 2 nights. We actually went on to Italy from here, but the train from Lucerne to the airport in Zurich is just an hour. I thought this gave us a good taste of Switzerland.
