You might as well spring for the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass. It is 363 chf 2nd class. The 4-day Flexi Pass is 286 chf and when you add the Half Fare Card on top of that for 60 chf, you've spent 346 chf, saving you a total of 17 chf. With the Swiss Travel Pass, you'll get free admission to museums and free local transit. Its only drawback as it only gives a 25% discount on the Jungfraujochbahn above Wengen, whereas the Half fare card gives 50%. Otherwise, you get the 50% discount on all the other mountain lifts in the Berner Oberland and Zermatt.
Generally, the one-month Half Fare Card for 120 chf and buy point to point tickets for each trip saves the most money. The Travel Pass has some advantages as far as convenience goes. You can find out for yourself by going to www.sbb.ch and pricing out each leg of the trip and seeing the cost at full fare, with half fare, and with a pass.

Just a few observations:

  • Is there some special reason for staying over night in Bern, arriving as you are at 11:00am would leave plenty of time to go to Lauterbrunnen on day one.

  • On day six why not take the Glacier Express to St. Moritz and stay there rather than return to Zurich

  • On day seven take the Bernina Express to Tirano and then continue on to Venice. Leaving St. Moritz at 9:30 am would get you to Venice at 5:30 pm, so you could even break it up a bit and have a meal before arriving at say 7:30 pm.

Bern is a larger city, with inside attractions - not external scenic beauty. With that short a time, I would skip it as well, and head directly for the mountains.

thanks for all your kind advices! Appreciate it so much!

This will be our first swiss trip and we are spending most of our times up in mountain (murren and Zermatt). Thus we wIsh to visit some cities if the time allowed.
Reason of spending the last night in Zurich is because we are catching an early flight to Venice the next day on day 7. Thus the whole trip will be 6 days full.

Thinking to get the half fare ticket to save on the point to point ticket instead of getting the swiss pass which is so much expensive. If were to get half fare card, all p2p ticket can only be bought at the station or can be bought in advance?

Staying in both the Jungfrau area and Zermatt area are really not necessary. You're not spending enough time in either of those places to actually explore/enjoy the area. Choose one or the other and spend your days there. One night here, 2 nights there really eats into you vacation time because you'll be spending so much time moving from one place to the other instead of just staying put to see all of the sites a particular destination has to offer. Also the Glacier Express is a time consuming venture. You're going to have dramatic vistas in both Zermatt and Jungfrau so why waste time sitting (again) on a slow moving train?

Hi,

I have to agree that 2 locations for 2 nights each (Zermatt and Muerren) isn't the best plan. 2 nights is 1 full day and 2 partial days. Figure from Muerren the Jungfraujoch trip alone will use up most of your only full day in the Berner Oberland. You leave no room in either location for the weather being rainy, overcast, etc. Imagine going all the way to Zermatt and it rains the one full day you have. We've stayed in both the Berner Oberland (Wengen) and Zermatt. For me, I'd spend 4 nights in the Berner Oberland (Muerren). As for Bern, I'd replace it with Luzern. I also agree the Glacier Express isn't necessary, we took the GE from St. Moritz to Zermatt and wished we didn't use a full day sitting on a train. No need to take a train trip to see stunning scenery. Just a few thoughts.
