I have a 7 day stay in Switzerland that I cant break up the accommodations. We are coming in from Geneva and after our stay heading to Colmar before flying out of Basel. My question is where is the best base. We plan on going to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnun, Murren, maybe Andermatt and Lucern but not sure if we should base in the city, the lakes or the mountains. We probably prefer the mountains but may not be the best logistics. Thoughts? Thanks!
What time of year? What do you want to do?
Check out train travel times at Sbb.ch the Swiss rail websites. Most of the places you mention are on the north side pf the front range of the Alps. Andermatt is on the south side.
Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen are major tourist stops on the train lines. Murren is not. Lucerne obviously is but is 120+ minutes from the Oberland. Andermatt takes 2 1/2 hours from Lucerne in another direction. Good luck.
It only takes 20-30 minutes more to get from Murren from Lauterbrunnen. They synchronize the trains and cable cars so once you’re on one the other will be waiting for you.
Lauterbrunnen will be the most central for getting to Grindelwald and Murren. Murren has incredible views and is 25 minutes further up into the mountains than Lauterbrunnen. Lucerne is 2.5 train hours away and the train trip is spectacular, I’d recommend 3-4 nights in Lauterbrunnen or awesome Murren, and then 2-3 nights in Lucerne.
