7-10 Days in Switzerland

We will be arriving in Basel on May 8, 2015 via river cruise. We want to tour Switzerland for the next 7-10 days, hopefully via trains and boats. After spending days surfing and just getting more confused I thought I would give the Forum a query. Can anyone suggest a route to see the highlights of the area concentrating on the physical beauty of the country?
Thanks,
Roger and Shirley

Try to be a bit more specific about what you would like to see. The physical beauty of Switzerland pretty much surrounds you wherever you are, even in some of the cities.
Don't discount the cities. They are fascinating with wonderful (expensive) shops, good restaurants, museums and very friendly people.
My suggestion would be that you get the Rick Steves guide book and look at his descriptions of the various areas, Also you might want to think about which part of Switzerland you will be most comfortable in--the German-speaking section, (Schweitzerdeutsch), the French speaking section or the Italian speaking section.
Of course, you will find speakers of English everywhere in Switzerland.
Once you focus, you will be able to plan a memorable trip.
Good Luck!

My recommendation would be to take a leisurely pace going in a semi-circle...start in Lucerne, head to the Berner Oberland, see Zermatt if you want to have that experience, and then head down to Lake Geneva. That route will give you a look at a classic Swiss town, spectacular mountains, the Matterhorn, and one of the more picturesque lakes in Europe. There is plenty to do and see in all four areas and you'll get a overview of the country. If you wanted to eliminate something from that list and spend a little more time in each place, then I would cut out Zermatt - some people feel strongly about seeing the Matterhorn but really, the town is purely for tourists now, and when you will be there in May the chances of clouds and rain is high.

I'd second what Anita said. Spend 3 nights/2 days in Lucerne, 4 nights/3 days in the Berner Oberland, 3 nights/2 days in Lausanne. You'll find lots to keep you busy in each of these areas and they will leave you wishing you had more time.

Thank you for all the good responses. That is what I enjoy so much about the Forum sites, you get answers from people that have experienced the locations being asked about.

While my initial question stated 7-10 days we actually do not have any specific time line requirement for returning home back in Sequim, Washington. We enjoy traveling the small out of the way locations rather than being in the larger cities and being from the Pacific Northwest in Washington State we really enjoy the mountains and wildlife. From the suggestions it sounds like a circular travel is possible. We will be arriving in Amsterdam via cruise ship and then after a few days in Amsterdam take the Viking River cruise to Basel at which time we would like to tour Switzerland. We
have not selected a date or city to depart from for our flight back to Seattle but I am assuming we would leave Zurich for the flight back home.
Thanks again,
Roger

"have not selected a date or city to depart from for our flight back to Seattle but I am assuming we would leave Zurich for the flight back home."

In addition to Zurich, you can also depart from Geneva or Basel airports. Since none of these have nonstop flights to Seattle, choose based on price and your itinerary.
