6 days in Switzerland-need itinerary

We'll be arriving in Zurich and flying out of Milan. We don't ski but would like to spend at least one night in an Alpine village--I think. We like poking around, eating and drinking, taking in historical sights. We need to spend one night in Milan to be there to fly out. I'd like to see three areas that each have a different feel. Suggestions?

Advice on efficient transportation and cost effective transportation would be appreciated.

  • You only have one night (or is it 6 days)? Really, with 1 night you will not see much as you will only have 2 part-days.
  • What time are you arriving in Zürich? Is that Zürich city centre or airport?
  • Where do you want to go after this one night? Direct to Milan? That will take a half day.
  • What time of year is this?

"We like poking around, eating and drinking, taking in historical sights." - one night is not enough time to do this.

The method of transport is train, easy to get by train from Zürich (city or airport) to anywhere in Switzerland, and from most of Switzerland to Milan.

One night option A - Luzern, not a village, a town, but easy access from Zürich and trains to Milan. Given your timeframe a good option.
One night option B - train tour over the Bernina Route: Zürich - Chur (overnight). Next day: Bernina Route - Tirano - Milan. Lots of mountains and a glacier to see out of the window.

If you have all 6 days to spend in a mountain village: Jungfrau region. Choose 1 of: Wengen, Müren, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald.
