4 nights @ Wengen

Hi,We have only 4 nights at Bernese Oberland region and we choose Wengen as our base.

We are traveling with our 16 month old son. We are not trying to see/do everything in a short period of time. But we love to see nature, go for small hikes, and enjoy food &local culture.

We will be arriving Wengen late in the evening around 4ish.What can we do on our first evening in Wenegn?Any suggestions for a small trip/sightseeing ?

One thing in our wish list is to do a scenic train ride. May be a 4-5 hrs trip.Could you please recommend few options for us.

We are not very keen in visiting Jungfraujoch with our baby(Dont want to take a risk with altitude sickness). With such a short time, what would you guys recommend us to see/do in 4 days?Any must visit places for a first timer to Switzerland.

A day trip to Lucerne,is it worth it?or should we just be in BO ?

Any suggestion/recommendations are highly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Traveling with a small child, you might want to check out this blog that lists lots of hikes and excursions suitable for children, all across Switzerland. The author gives lots of good tips and evaluates walking paths according to how well they would work for small kids, which honestly I also found useful as an adult! ;)

I love Luzern and the train ride there is one half of the Golden Pass scenic train ride. I believe about 2 hours. I think a 16 month old would really enjoy the farm animals at Gimmelwald. We saw cats, goats and cows. The Schilthorn is less than 10,000 feet it that makes a difference to you. I think that its over 1000 feet lower than Jungfraujoch. If you are getting a swiss pass its included.

I took our 10 month old up to Schilthorn without any problems. Northface trail above Murren is a beautiful walk. Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is a nice walk as well.

You cannot enter Trummelbach falls on the valley floor. The minimum age limit is four years old, but it is a nice walk.

For your first day, I would head straight up on the Mannlichen lift. There is a restaurant and play area right there. The last time the lift heads back down for the day is 530PM so be mindful of the time. Or, take your time up there and walk the Mannlichen to KS walk and get back to Wengen via train.
