Download the SBB app, and check out the various SBB Pass options. The Eurail Pass won't help on Swiss trains. I'd stay in Pontressina instead of St Moritz, which is just a high-end shopping mecca. Check the RS Guide for hotels. We rode the regional trains on the Bernina Express route, instead of the panoramic trains. They use the same tracks, no seat reservations required, had more flexible schedules, and less crowded. And, the windows opened, which was better for pix, and breathing that fresh mountain air.

You also may do better buying low cost separate German rail tickets in advance, than buying a pass. Download the DB app.
Look for u- tube videos for each train station, which can be very helpful on switching trains. Light carry- on luggage is a primary recommendation. Be ready to hop off the train the second it stops. Know your platforms - indicated on the app. Lifts can be hard to find, and there are lots of steep stairs.
You have a short time in Zermatt, which decreases your chances of actually seeing the Matterhorn. Are you ok with that?
The scenery is fantastic, but you're spending alot of time on trains. Have you checked out the duration of the routes?
Have a great trip, safe travels.

Thank for your prompt reponse. Fair point on too much time on trains and thanks for Eurail, Pontressina and regular train suggestion. Will do, and will also have more time gap between connnections to be safe.
So with that in mind here are the modification. Welcome further refinement.

Day 1 - Zurich to Chur (short train ride) Stay at Chur. Understand it is not a fun town!
Day 2 - Chur to Zermatt (GE) OR Chur to Tirano (BE) - Which do you suggest? First week of May not have good Alpine or Zermatt weather. Stay in Zermatt. Or we can terminate the GE in a town before Zermatt (Andermatt, Visp, Brig) Not sure if the Zermatt train ride is worth missing. For BE, we can go to Tirano, turn around and stay in a small town and head out to Zurich day after.
3.No train day!! Can you suggest a small town to stay, from where we can go to Zurich next dat
Day 4 -Small small town to Zurich and fly back home

If you don't have an early flight, stay in Lucerne. It's an easy 1+ hr commute. The train goes straight to the Zurich airport. (I believe any current track construction will be finished by then.) so does that give you two nights in Lucerne?

So here seems to be the (near) final iternary for second week of May, 2025. Will greatly apprecate answers and insights!!

Day 1 - Zurich to Zermatt - Stay in Zermatt
Day 2 - Gornegrat or Klein Matternhorn - weather permitting, will buy ticket the on the day (any risks of selling out? - its early May and low season!). What else can be done in Zermatt if weather does not cooperate? Stay in Zermatt
Day 3 - Glacier Express - Zermatt to Chur - Stay at Chur
Day 4 - Chur to Zurich - Zurich sight seeing. Stay in Zurich
Day 5 - Fly back home

Booked in Hotel Alphubel in Zermatt and Hotel Freieck in Chur. Any experience at these 2 or other suggestions?
Plan to buy point to point train tickets (via Omio) and seat in Glacier express

Thanks in advance.

“The Eurail Pass won’t help on Swiss trains”.

Actually a Global Pass will cover Swiss trains, including the scenic trains.

https://www.thetrainline.com/en-us/via/europe/switzerland/switzerland-eurail-pass-itinerary

That is just one of many websites that confirm that.

What a Eurail Global Pass does NOT cover is the mandatory seat reservation fee on the Glacier Express and Bernina Express. But neither does a Swiss Travel Pass. You always have to buy that separately, even if you buy a ticket.

Make sure to get your seat reservations for the Glacier Express when they are first released, 93 days in advance, as they go quickly.

https://glacierexpress.ch/en/price

If you buy regular tickets rather than using a pass of some type, you will pay 124 CHF for each ticket—-plus the reservation fee of 49 CHF. A better plan, if you aren’t going to use a Eurail Global Pass, is to buy a Saver Day Pass for that day of travel. They are available now for the second week of May (6 months in advance is when they go on sale).

We had two full days in Zermatt in early October. The first one luckily was perfect and we caught the Gornergrat up to see the Matterhorn and have lunch.

The second day was damp and completely clouded over.

We chose to hike up to the Gorner Gorge. We are not usually hikers, so found it slightly difficult but we managed. We hiked back via a restaurant named Blatten where we had a sensational lunch and a glass of wine, before heading back to town.

In the afternoon, we wandered the very cute town of Zermatt, especially the Hinterdorf area with its 500 year old houses. We also visited the graveyard where all the Matterhorn climbers who didn't make it are buried, and also the very good Matterhorn Museum.

We loved our two days there.

We caught both the Glacier and Bernina Expresses in the panorama trains and thoroughly enjoyed both. There were windows at the end of the carriages for glare free photos, but to us it was more about the experience than the pictures, although we did take a few and glare wasn't much of an issue.

We stayed in St. Moritz for two nights which meant that we got the free Engadin card allowing us up all the mountain transport which was sensational. We did visit Pontresina, which was small but very pretty.

We also did an overnight in Tirano, staying at the Hotel Bernina. We discovered an amazing restaurant in Tirano, with some of the best food of our almost month long trip - the Parracavini Restaurant.

A thing to be aware off: The Bernina Express only requires reservations in the panoramic coaches. There are always 2 or 3 normal coaches at the front, where you do not need a reservation. Just a valid ticket or pass. And there are other trains on the route as well.
The Glacier Express requires reservations regardless of where you sit, but here too there are other trains on the route, with the same scenery...

Since seat reservations are not required for the first 3 cars (without the panoramic windows), the official Bernina Express website is deceptive, because it says in multiple places that seat reservations are mandatory. It does not mention (as far as I can find) an exception for the non-panoramic cars at the front of the train.

https://tickets.rhb.ch/en/pages/bernina-express

If you look at the trains shown in the videos on the website, there are 3 cars in the front of the train that do not have the panoramic windows, but how is one top know that these 3 cars do not require seat reservations? If you go to make the “mandatory” seat reservations, the seating charts will show 5 cars, 2 in first class and 3 in second class. Car numbers are 11-15. But it is hard to see in the video that the full train consists of 8 cars—-3 regular cars, followed by 5 cars with panoramic windows. Most of the frames show only 3 panoramic cars, with or without the preceding non-panoramic cars (watch the video to see).

As I am now planning to take Glacier Express (Zermatt to Chur), any insight (when, how, what) on booking will be appreciated. Also, have 1.5 days in Zermatt. Is it Ok to plan to buy day of event booking, based on the weather?

Since seat reservations are not required for the first 3 cars (without
the panoramic windows), the official Bernina Express website is
deceptive, because it says in multiple places that seat reservations
are mandatory.

The official timetable is here: https://www.oev-info.ch/de/fahrplan-aktuell/fahrplanfelder/2025-950

And there it says for the PE "Führt reservierungspflichtige Panoramawagen". Literally "conveys panoramic cars with compulsory reservations.
So only those cars are indeed subject to reservations.

The Glacier Express timetable is here: https://www.oev-info.ch/sites/default/files/fap/2025/pdf/144.pdf

The crucial difference here is that the Glacier Express has the "R in a square" symbol, which means that reservation is compulsory for the whole train.
