My wife and i will be in Murren for 4 days. We will be arriving in Zurich, spending the night then taking the train to murren. Would the Swiss Transfer Ticket be the best way to go? Can I wait until i get to Switzerland to purchase this?
Also it was mentioned by one of your travelers that the Berner Oberland Pass was an good option. Would this be more cost efficient than just pay as you go?
Thanks
The only real answer is that you have to figure the costs of all your trips individually to see if point-to-point is cheaper than a pass. Now I know a lot of people just won't take the time to do that (me either) and for the majority of people I always recommend the good old Half Fare Card...every bit of transportation you use in Switzerland is reduced by 1/2 with the card. The Berner Oberland Pass may be worthwhile but it locks you into the Berner Oberland (of which Zurich is not).
Just pick up the HFC when you arrive in the Zurich airport and be on your way. Every time you purchase tickets just tell the ticket sellers that you have a HFC, they'll charge you just 50% of the standard fare. When you're on the train and the ticket inspector comes by you'll show them your ticket as well as your HFC.
Again, where are you going after you leave Muerren?
You have to buy the Transfer Ticket before you enter Switzerland, but you can buy the Half Fare Card at any Swiss train station. Since it costs 120 CHF, you need to have more than 240 CHF (per person) train and bus tickets to pay off.
If you plan to go to the Jungfrau while in Murren then the HFC is practically a no-brainer as the savings from the HFC on that trip alone will cover the cost of purchase of the HFC.
