My wife and I will be spending 3 nights before boarding a river cruise in Basel. Haven't decided whether we will fly into Zurich or Geneva. Any suggestions on airports or 3 day itinerary? If possible I would like to have a glimpse of the Alps.

Opposite of you, we ended our cruise in Basel and spent 2 nights each in Lucerne and Zurich (also a weekend in Colmar). If you scroll down the link below to day-12 you can read what we did with those days.

Basel is quite nice. We spent three nights there before starting a river cruise. It is a colorful city with an atmospheric town square, interesting cathedral, situated on the river. But it is not in the mountains. Luzern is amazing and one of my favorite cities in Europe. There you can see the alps and actually take a day trip to the top of a mountain. We did Rigi. We took a boat across beautiful Lake Luzern/Lucerne and then a cog wheel train to the top of Mt. Rigi. There are a couple other options for mountain excursions from Luzern as well. The town center, itself, is very pretty and you would want to spend a least a half day wandering around. If you had more time, I'd suggest a few days in Luzern and one or two in Basel.
