Arriving Zurich in the morning. Have three nights before heading down to Rome. Thought we'd base in Lucerne.
Would like to see mountains. I'd appreciate any ideas on what we can accomplish in so little time. Thanks

Perhaps the Lucerne part of my 2021 Trip Report can be helpful . It's a beautiful area with access to Mt Rigi, Pilatus, and Stanserhorn.

After 2 nights in Lucerne I'm wondering if it makes sense to take the train further into the Alps for more scenery and mountains spending the night there before heading down to Rome. Would this make sense or just adding more time to trip to Rome?

No, stay in one hotel. Go up the Mt Titlis from Luzern which is an easy trip from Luzern. Do the Berner Oberland on another trip.

Arrival morning head to Lucerne (70 minutes by train). Walk Lucerne to keep yourself awake after your flight, sleep in Lucerne all 3 nights. Day two do Mt. Titilis and go via boat. Day three do Mt. Rigi. Each evening you can enjoy Lucerne which has a lot to offer for evening walks and restaurants.
