2 Nights in Switzerland

Our party of six is heading from San Gimignano to Switzerland for 2 nights before returning to Varenna on Lake Como for several nights in September 2020. We will have a vehicle in Tuscany but would like to return it before traveling by train to Switzerland and Varenna. We would like help with the following:

  • Where is the best place to return the vehicle and catch a train to Switzerland? We were hoping to take the Bernina Express but are open to suggestions.
  • Where should we spend 2 nights in Switzerland? Any hotel recommendations? We would prefer to spend both in one location and return from there to Varenna by train.
  • Best way to get back to Varenna.
  • We greatly appreciate any suggestions to maximize our 2 nights in Switzerland as none of us has been there before.

I would recommend that you switch your city plan and go first to Varenna then to Switzerland. Then you will not be backtracking. But if you are planning to go that route then drop the car in Florence, catch a train to Milan, then the train to Tirano where you can then catch, I think, the Bernina. But by then it will be about the end of the day when you reach Tirano unless you are catching the early train out of Florence (8am), then it is a 5 hour train to Tirano. And then you would have to see if Bernina has a northbound route that runs after 1pm.

Or you could catch a later train from Florence to Interlaken that takes 6 hours and you are there by 5pm. Enjoy Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen those two days. Then a 5-1/2 hour train back to Varenna.
