We are travelling from Como to Basel by train and have 2 nights to book in Switzerland on the way. It will be late October so many of the cable cars are closed last week of October. With this in mind would you recommend 2 nights in Lucerne or is it worth the train trip to have 1 night in Lucerne and then 1 night in Lauterbrunnen before going on to Basel?

Love both…..stay in Hotel des Alpes in Luzern on the river or Hotel Balances….or make certain you eat a meal in either of those…..cheese pies in Luzern are WONDERFUL……and Lauterbrunnen is the transportation hub and puts you in the valley of the Jungfrau…….spending a day further up in Wengen would put you in the center of the alps……you might even investigate a day boat trip from Interlaken on Lake Brienz to Hotel Geissbach, a lovely lunch on their patio and a boat ride back to Interlaken……..a wonderful day!

I agree with prior advice. Every time you switch a base it cost you half a day. And two nights in one base actually equals one full vacation day
