No bus needed. Take the train south from Lugano to Milano Centrale, and transfer there for a train going to Varenna-Esino. This will show up on Trenitalia but not on bahn.de.

You could also go from Lugano to Como San Giovanni station, taxi (or bus) down to the ferry dock and ride a ferry up the lake to Varenna.

Well, a combination of bus Lugano to Menaggio and ferry Menaggio to Varenna would be the shortest possible itinerary. Doing it by train means backtracking all the way to Milan.

Correct,,but the question is whether they "need" to take a bus. Some people do not like them.

And actually there is a shorter train option that does not require travel to Milan. Lugano to Monza, change there formVarenna. Mtotal travel, time just under two hours.

The bus to Menaggio takes an hour, and then how long domtheynwait for a ferry across the lake? ,
