Two friends and I are leaving Venice on Oct 31/2014 to catch a flight home to Canada the morning of Nov 2/2014 from Munich airport. We were planning to take the train and travel through Switzerland, spending the night of Oct 31/2014 somewhere scenic in Switzerland with the hope of spending the better part of Nov 1/2014 in said town with the taking a scenic cable car/gondola/train ride to even more scenic view and then boarding a train for Munich.
Any suggestions for an itinerary and accommodations for both nights?

Switzerland is more than a little out of your way to spend just one day. You could have a very scenic experience in the Mittenwald/Garmish-Partenkirchen area of Bavaria. It is lovely and mountainous there with several options for cable car rides to the tops of the mountains. There is quite a lot to see and do in this area to keep you busy with the extra time you have. It is also on a much more direct route to Munich from Venice so would save you a lot of time on the train.
