12 Day Honeymoon Itinerary Idea Switzerland/Italy

Hi all! My fiancé and I have booked flights flying in and out of Zurich for our honeymoon. I think I'm being a little too ambitious for our itinerary and would appreciate any feedback or insight.

We land in Zurich the morning of June 12th. I was hoping to spend the rest of that day and the next in Lucerne.

Then, we would travel to the Interlaken area for June 14-16th.

After Interlaken, we would travel to the Lake Como/Bellagio area from June 17th-June 19th.

Then take a train south to Rome from June 20th-June 22nd.

Then we would take a quick trip to the Amalfi Coast for the 23rd and 24th. With a scheduled late night flight from Rome to Zurich on the 24th. Leaving Zurich the morning of the 25th.

Have we lost our minds? Is it way more travel than I am anticipating? Thanks for your help!

Personally, yes, I think you are planning on too much travel. Especially when you factor in the actual time it takes to get between your destinations. Travel takes time. I would just do 12 days in Switzerland and save Italy for another time. You can expand your Swiss destinations to include Zermatt, Montreux, Engadine area, etc.

I recently did 2 nights in Lucerne, 1 in Lugano, 3 in Pontresina (Engadine), 3 in Zermatt, 1 in Montreux, 4 in Wengen, 1 in Zurich. And could easily have spent more time exploring each location.

You could keep Bellagio in the mix, as it is practically in Switzerland.

Yes, sorry, you’ve lost your mind :) That would be an absolutely exhausting honeymoon. If you’re already set on flying in and out of Zurich, I’d just enjoy Switzerland. Italy is the typical honeymoon destination for so many people but Switzerland is less crowded and has just as many romantic and epic places. Do something like 3 nights Luzern, 3 nights Wengen, 2 nights Montreux, 3 nights Locarno and train back to Zurich. You’d get lots of time on romantic lakes, with Swiss, French and Italian feels + time in a car free village up in the mountains. You can visit castles, villages, mountain top views, hiking, shopping, great food….Sounds like a lovely honeymoon to me!

Skip the Amalfi Coast as it doesn’t fit with the rest of your itinerary. Consider skipping Rome too but perhaps keep it due to possibility of better flights home. There would be no reason to return to Zurich then.
Interlacken- do not stay there rather stay up in the mountains of the Berner Oberland such as Grindelwald ( our favorite), Wengen or Murren.
After Bellagio return to Switzerland.
ALL of your stays are way too short! Looks exhausting. Three to four days would be best for all the stops you list.

Could you say a bit more about yourselves? Age range and interests? Do you enjoy hiking, or prefer to gaze at the mountains from a balcony or deck? For a lakeside or seaside locale, do you like to swim, or prefer to enjoy the views of the water and coastline without getting wet? In cities, do you visit museums or and historic sites, or focus on seeking out great local food and wine?

With the stress that comes with most weddings, you need time to relax, and chill out. Not keep going 90 mph. I'm afraid your honeymoon will not be filled with memories of good food, scenic places, and new experiences. It will be a blur of memories of train stations. Hate to rain on your parade, just offering some food for thought. Love long and prosper.

Have we lost our minds?

Perhaps... By the end of such a trip, the odds will be much better that you will have done so

Is it way more travel than I am anticipating? Thanks for your help!

Probably.

Amallfi Coast is just too far out of the way to be practical for your time frame

It seems you have committed to flying in/out of Zurich? Can you make a change to fly into Zurich and home from Rome?
If that does not work, and you are committed to the Amalfi Coast, have you looked at flying Naples to Zurich?

I cannot know what you anticipate, ( travel wise) but it's not what I would plan for a honeymoon

There's no need to race into Italy and race back, make that country your next trip. Stay in and enjoy Switzerland, there is plenty to do and see.

I think if your heart is set on Switzerland and Italy you can do that but I would stick to focusing on just Northern Italy! You can still do Lake Como area as well as different parts of Southern Switzerland (Lugano, Bellinzona and rest of the Ticino region)

Amalfi coast will add a lot of traveling time for such a short period of time. We spent 3 1/2 days there and it still wasn’t enough. I think spending more time in Lake Como will be well worth your time. We only had 2 days and it wasn’t enough to see all the towns. I would say spend 4 days there to visit at least Varenna and Lecco, and as well as Como and Bellagio.

Agree with others - you will spend too much time traveling from place to place, always packing/unpacking, and stressing about missing trains/planes/etc.

I would also stick to Switzerland and northern Italy. Lake como, and specifically Bellagio, are one of our fav places in the world and a must see if you are in the area.

We stayed in a suite at Borgo le Terrazze, and highly recommend staying there. Close enough to walk into town but quiet and relaxing. Cannot say enough about the view as well.
