My husband and I will have an 11 hour daytime layover in Zurich while on our way to another destination. We have never been in Switzerland before but have read that it is worth leaving the airport. We love exploring new places.
Someone mentioned that it might be better to visit Lucerne instead, but I don't know if we have enough time. I would appreciate recommendations on what you would do within that limited time-frame.

In your favor, Swiss trains are quite reliable. The Luzern train station is right at the edge of the old town. You would take the train from the airport to the central Zurich Train station (HB--Hauptbahnhof) and from there take the train to Luzern. You could do the RS walking tour of Luzern and wander around town. It will take you about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to Luzern. I would leave to go back to the airport at least 4 hours before your flight. You would have enough time in Luzern if your first flight is reasonably close to being on time to do the walking tour and walk along the river and have a drink/quick meal. Personally, I'd do it.
