Looking for input on travel in Switzerland in June. I will fly in to Zurich and train to Lucerne. Can stay (free) with a family member there, but want to do somethings outside of Lucerne. I have never visited before and I am traveling with my son who will have just graduated from college. Suggestions appreciated.

The excellent train system means it will be easy to take many day trips out of Lucerne. See this page or a guide book for ideas to get started : https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-us/
Do you mean you also want to stay somewhere else?
I would check off all that you can do by day trip, then evaluate what seems missing to you to pick your other bases.
The Bernese Oberland is very popular here (and for good reason), so that would be my choice for as many days as you can swing. Start searching accommodations asap as they are limited and expensive.

Thank you! Yes, hoping to spend a couple of nights away from Lucerne, mainly in the Lauterbrunen Valley area, mid week.
