10 days out…am I missing something?

We leave in 10 days! I’m getting very excited but as I look at my itinerary for four nights in Murren and 2 in Luzern I realize that I actually don’t have anything pre-booked or arranged. Starting to get nervous as this feels a little weird compared to other trips we’ve taken.

I’ve got the super easy to use SBB app and Swiss half fare card (and the family pass) and booked my international leg of the train from Italy into Switzerland, but no further travel has been pre-booked.

We plan to do family rated hikes on both sides of the lauterbrunnern valley, visit the schilthorn and James Bond attractions (but not necessarily dine in the restaurant), and do the pilatus golden round trip when we are in Lucerne (with the toboggan course).

Not planning to go paragliding, Jungfrau, or First. We are staying at hotel Eiger in Murren. Don’t have any dinner reservations made (traveling with tweens, so not looking for anything exclusive)

Am I missing something?

Nope! You’ll be fine just booking trains/cable cars as you go with your HFC and in terms of dinner, I’d ask the hotel when you arrive if they’d recommend you commit to a time with them if you plan to eat dinner there some nights. Some dinner places you may have trouble getting into by just walking up. We’ve sometimes gotten lucky and got into place like the Hotel Eiger with very little notice, but other times when we’ve gone last minute or even same day to try to eat somewhere in Mürren (various spots) we’ve found it booked out. We spend our summers living in Mürren, so I’m confident this is the case throughout the summer.

We did Pilatus this week. What made it fun was how we did it. We took the boat from Luzern to Alpanchstad. Then the cogwheel train up, and cable cars down and yes the toboggan run! What I can say about the tobaggan run was that the wait was 70 minutes mid day on Wednesday!

Matt
We are planning the same at Pilatus—what you described is what they call the “golden round trip”. Did you book in advance?

We did not book in advance; the STP covered all but the cogwheel train and cable cars. We bought tickets at the window in Lucerne at the dock. But it was a Wednesday morning before European kids were out of school.

We ate at hotel Eiger in Murren a couple of weeks ago! We were staying in Hotel Jungfrau and walked down. It was really good! Great service, wonderful food, and incredible views but didn't feel stuffy or froo-froo. Just mentioning it since you'll be staying there. a good choice for food!

btw, we loved our dining at Hotel Jungfrau, too! :)

Thanks for the feedback on other good dining options in Murren— it seems there are not too many!

There are plenty of eating options in Mürren. Here are a list of my favorites.

Lunch or Dinner — Hotel Eiger, Eiger Guesthouse, Hotel Alpenblick, Mürren Palace, Stagerstubli, Hotel Edelweiss, Hotel Alpina,

Lunch - All of the above + InSport, AltiMetzg, Cafe Liv, Time Out Bistro, Allmendhubel

No disrespect to the above review on Hotel Jungfrau (glad they had a good experience!) but I personally won’t go to Hotel Jungfrau because its management is not looking out for the best interests of Mürren. It’s owned by foreigners who are using the hotel for suspicious money laundering and it suffers because of it. It’s not kept up in the way it should be for such a historic property.
