10 days in Switzerland in July end

My wife and I will be traveling to Switzerland for 10 days end of July (starting and ending in Zurich). My wife is pregnant so we would like to do this at a relatively relaxed pace. In terms of interests we are not big into sightseeing but we love scenic views / rides, we would like to do easy hikes and like being in small towns and villages as opposed to cities.

In terms of itinerary we are thinking of the following:

  • Lucerne (2/3 days) - Old town, Mt Titlis / Engelberg, Mt Pilatus / Mt Rigi

  • Murren / Wengen (4/5 days) - Schilthorn / Murren, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Jungfrau, Lakes Thun / Brienz

  • Montreux / Lausanne (2/3 days)

Few questions for the group and in general any suggestions would be very welcome.

  • Thoughts on the number of days in each of the places or if you suggest any other places?

  • What is a better base? Am leaning towards Wengen but would be great to know others views. We would love to be in a smaller village in a scenic setting but want to make sure it is convenient from a transportation point of view as well has decent food options (we are not fussy eaters but are vegetarians)

  • Any pregnancy related suggestions (my wife will be in her 5th month)? Our doctor has already given us the green light and altitude related advice. Dont have any specific question here but if anyone has experiences they would like to share it would be great to know what others experienced

  • Feels like we should take the 8 day Swiss travel pass but let us know if you think otherwise. Maybe the first or second day we wont use it (as we have a short jouney from Zurich Airport to Lucerne) and can use it for the balance 8 days

  • Any places we should visit in addition to the ones I mentioned above or any links to blogs which detail things to do in these places?

Thank you very much for your suggestions and time in advance

I am assuming 9 nights so 8 FULL days? Arrival and departure days are basically lost to travel.

With 9 nights I would spend 3 Luzern, 4 Mürren, and 2 in Vevey, which is between Lausanne and Montreux. Why Vevey? Charming lakeside town, not too big, good connections. As to Mürren, the easy hiking and scenic views in the Jungfrau Region are unequaled.

As to order, since you have to fly out of Zurich you might make Luzern the final stop as it is only an hour or so to the airport from there. You'll have to look at transport times and decide exactly how you want to string this together.

Thanks very much for the replies, very helpful!

We have 10 night and 9.5 days (reach Zurich at 10am so probably will check into our accommodation at Lucerne at 2pm or so)

Will look in Vevey and see if it makes sense to pick that over Montreux.

We are now coming back to Zurich on the last evening so we avoid taking a long train on the day of our flight.

Per Laurel's suggestion, you can go straight to Vevey from Zurich airport and work your way from there. From Zurich airport, it is only 2 3/4 hours to Vevey (or Montreux). Train connections every 30 minutes. That way you can spend the last night in Luzern.

If your wife is pregnant, the you should budget a lot of slack time. Also, Alpine weather is fickle, and there may be rain on some days. Have a Plan B ready.
