If you only had 1 city to choose, which one would you recommend? ( 1 full day)
Lucerne seems really nice and colorful and its location looks great...
Zurich seems like a big city. Less charming?
Bern seems nice too

It would depend on the other details of the itinerary. Zurich does have an old town.
Have you read about each place--surely one will stand out once you know what they have to offer.
Yes I have read about each of them and check pictures but I would rather ask people who have been there already. Transportation would not be a problem: we will have the Berner Oberland Pass to go to either Bern or Lucern from Lautebrunnen while on vacation there. We fly back to Canada from Zurich airport :)
OK, been to all three. Luzern wins - no contest. Bern is nice but not in the mountains - just another charming old Germanic town. Zurich is a busy cosmopolitan business center. Good news is that you can get to Zurich airport easily from Luzern or Bern, so you can stay overnight at either.
Luzern has the lake on which you can cruise, and multiple choices in mountaintops you can visit.
Ahhhhhhhhhh That was my initial feeling about Lucern!

Lucerne and its bridge are iconic. Bern is actually interesting - Einstein museum. Zurich old town - so so.
