I'm going to be in zurich for five days. Last time I was there I took a glacier express to Italy and it was gorgeous. This time I'm staying in Zurich only so I wanted a nice day trip by train to enjoy some of the beautiful mountainous areas. Any suggestions? Also since I'm staying just in Zurich, anyone have anything they would recommend. The fabulous shopping experience and I have two restaurants: café zuhringer and wirtschaft neumarkt. and the riverboat cruise. Love any tips.
You can certainly do a day trip from Zurich to Lucerne (< 1 hr by train). From Lucerne you can take one of several alpine excursions - Mt Titlis, Mt Pilatus, the Jungfraujoch, etc. We enjoyed the trip up Mt Pilatus by cable car and gondola and then down by incline railway. You can also include a cruise on the lake to get to the starting point of the excursion.
My vote is for Mt Pilatus, too. I think the Jungfrau is too far and requires too much time for a day trip.
Another vote for Mt. Pilatus.
As above Mt Pilatus but Lucerne is also worth a visit.
