Looking for a recommendation for restaurants in Zurich. Will be visiting 1 day before boarding cruise in Basel. Looking for a very good restaurant for dinner that showcases Swiss food. Also the best bakery for a quick stop.
I've barely been to Zurich so I can't help you there. We started a cruise in Basel, as well. Basel is a beautiful, colorful city situated on the Rhine. We spent our two nights prior to the cruise in Basel as there was plenty to see.
We popped into a bakery when we saw one and baked goods are outstanding.. We only ate one restaurant in Zurich and do not have the name. The food was heavier than we like.
Pastries! If we need to make a coffee stop during our day.
Thanks for restaurant recommendation!
Thanks so much!
You should have no trouble finding a good bakery. As for a very good restaurant, there are probably many in Zurich, a wealthy and sophisticated city. But the problem is there is really no “Swiss” cuisine; it is all regional. And the areas of Switzerland include French, Italian and German language and influence. The unifying factors are cheese and butter.
I do not care for lots of cheese and avoid fondue and raclette, as well a horsemeat, which you may find in some places. In Zurich, the only restaurant we have tried is the French-inspired Mère Catherine, in the oldtown area. We have been there a number of times over the years, always enjoying our meal, and the outside tables in a little patio. It is excellent and well-regarded, but it may not seem “Swiss” to you.

I agree with the recommendation of Haus Hitli (multiple locations), although as the person who posted said, it's vegetarian.
I also recommend Cafe & Condetorei 1842. A Swiss friend took me there for hot chocolate in February, as it was a favourite place that her grandparents used to take her for treats.
The classic Zurich dish, and my favourite, is Zurcher Geschnetzeltes, which is veal in a sour cream & mushroom sauce. Served with vegetables and rosti. I've never had this in Zurich though, so can't recommend who makes it best. I"ve had delicious rosti from the restaurant at the Zurich train station
Swiss Chuchi on Rosengasse is a no-frills restaurant favored by locals (indoor or outdoor tables). Not posh, but authentic.
Zeughauskeller and Haus zum Rueden are also worthy of consideration.
Thanks to all for your recommendations!
In Olde Town, Swiss Chuchi if you want traditional Zurich regional food. I wouldn’t consider it fine dining but very popular. You’ll need reservations, they were waiting in a long line to get in last week. We also ate at Mere Catherine which as someone already mentioned is very good and nice in an outside courtyard.
Another recommendation for Restaurant Zeughauskeller. It is housed in a building built in 1487. Used to be an Amory. The food is very good and very traditional. I would advise making a reservation for dinner.
When I was in Zurich for the first time, I used tripadvisor and its reviews. Because the country is expensive, and if you just get to the first restaurant you see, you can have a traditional tourist rip off.
