Staying in the Bernese Oberland area

My wife and I are planning a mid September trip to Switzerland with four nights in central Switzerland. Looking for advice regarding where to stay in either Murren, Grindelwald, or Wengen, and if it's best to stay in one place for 4 nights or perhaps in two of the towns mentioned for two nights each? Lastly, is 3 nights (two full days) adequate to get a feel of the Luzern area? This is our first visit to Switzerland. Thanks for any input you may have.

We spent a week in Grindelwald which we loved. We had a car and explored the area, including the mountain towns including those listed in this post.

I would stay in either Murren or Wengen. With just 4 nights, I would pick one. Sure, 3 nights in Luzern is fine.

I have a lot of info. in my trip reports that you might find helpful:

This is a good resource by forum member shoe for the berner oberland area.

Carrie,
Thanks for sharing this wealth of knowledge, particularly about hiking in the area. We can't wait for the experience.

I would base in one place, and for as long as you can. We spent 5 nights in Wengen in July. We had some rain 5 days of 6, so we had to constantly flex our plans for when the weather was best. You will need to do the same. If you split your time, you’re taking a big gamble that weather will cooperate for a small window of time.

Murren and Wengen are both car-free towns high in the mountains. Wengen is a bit easier to get to. Grindelwald has cars, and lots of tour buses. We lived Wengen because we could easily go up and over the mountain to Grindelwald, or across the valley to Murren.
