We liked this place for pizza at lunch: Ristorante Mama Leone on Muehlenplatz. I'd say $$ with sharing of pizzas. There are a lot of places along the riverfront (the left bank) you can peruse the menus while walking. There was an English Pub (or was it Irish?) next to the Hotel des Alpes where you can get a good hamburger at $ prices.

Manora Resturant on the top floor and rooftop of the Manor department store. Moderate price and many food options. Nice view from the roof top.
Manor Luzern (department store)
Weggisgasse 5, 6002 Luzern, Switzerland

And if you can eat vegetarian food, try Tibits Luzern in the Luzern train station second floor.

Bufett by weight. Moderate price if you don't overdo.

By definition not much in the way of restaurant meals is economy priced ($). But that said, prices weren't so high that I can remember what we paid. Just enjoy the experience.

Travel Man, yes that sounds about right. When we were there the place was full of Americans, all of us congratulating ourselves on finding the cheapest place in town.

Edgar beat me to it - Manora and Tibits were going to be my recommendations for affordable food in Luzern (and many other Swiss cities).

To add some detail, Manora is delicious and half the price of a restaurant with waiter service. And everything is fresh made - it's not sitting on steam tables. The only catches: it's always mobbed, as Swiss people know it's the best deal in town, and it's only open department store hours, meaning early dinner Monday through Friday, lunch only on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.

Tibits is open every day for lunch and dinner, so it's particularly handy when Manora is closed. It's kind of hidden, as most of the eateries in the Luzern train station are in the basement, and this is on the top floor.

Restaurant "Made In Sud" was not expensive (for Switzerland) and had excellent food. Highly recommend.
