Lucerne hotel suggestions for family of 4- how important is it to be close to train station

Hi! Looking for reasonably priced hotel suggestions for Lucerne. We will not have a car, will be doing day trips via train, is it important that we are close to the train station? Thank you!

Lucerne is very compact and walkable. The Alstadt area (Old Town) is a brief walk across the pedestrian friendly bridge from the train station and it is also very nice.

There are many hotels within a 10 minute walk to the train station. Try using the map feature on Booking.com and you will find a wide array. When you say reasonably priced, keep in mind Switzerland is expensive and reasonably means different prices to different people. I always think if day tripping you want to be close to the train station. Enjoy.

Edit: Two rooms may be cheaper than one family room.

As noted Luzern old town is very compact and walkable. Our hotel (Waldstaetterhof accross the street from the train station), gave us a Luzern City Card that gave us free local bus transporation: https://www.luzern.com/en/services/visitor-card-lucerne/

The Visitor Card gives over night guests free use of buses and trains
within zone 10 of the city network, as well as a range of discounts
for cableways, mountain railways, museums and excursions in the
Lucerne-Lake Lucerne Region.

I stayed at The Continental adjacent to the train station. I don’t know what you would consider reasonable. For me everything but yogurt was expensive so be prepared. Breakfast is often included in the price of lodging. My best meal was in Old Town and was along the river.
Mill’Feuille was a cool restaurant with a nice view. I suggest making a reservation.
Good luck.

I would say access to the train station, which is also adjacent to the lake ferries, is pretty important for day tripping. Safe travels!

We stayed at the Hotel Des Alpes, which is just across the river from the train station, good rooms with nice view of the river and the covered bridge. Good Breakfast. This is the perfect location for being in Lucerne, your close to the trains station, boat docks, and all the old town sights.

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions! We are now definitely looking for a hotel near the train station. To us, reasonably priced is around $300/night. I agree, Switzerland is pricey, but looks like it will be worth it:) A trip of a lifetime!!

The hotels closest to the train station are over your budget, but Hotel Stern has quad rooms for 220-252 CHF/night. Availability is limited, however,.

The suggestion to use booking.com to find hotels from the map view is a good one—-if you get the right view it shows all the hotels and the price. Then be sure to book directly with the hotel.

I have stayed at the Ameron Hotel Flora twice. It's a few minute walk to the train station and the entrance to the covered bridge is down the street. Decent breakfast.

We ended up booking the Continental, a little more than I wanted, but at least we have a room! I plan to check out the suggestions here! Thank you!

I love staying at the Hotel Des Alps too, but if that doesn't work due to availability or price, keep in mind that the hotels in Luzern include a transit pass for everyone during your stay. So if you find the right place for you and it's a 20 min walk from the station, there will be a bus you can take. The buses are quite easy to use and the price will be included in your hotel bill.

Also, my daughter has lived in Luzern since 2018 and no one has ever asked her for proof of payment on any bus. On the train? of course! But not on the bus.
