We are 3 seniors looking where to stay in Lauderbrennen area 4-5 nights, Zermatt 1 night and Geneva 2 nights before we fly back home. We would prefer someplace close to transportation and restaurants
We stayed at the Silberhorn Hotel in Lauterbrunnen, which was close to the train station, so easy access up the Schilthorn and Jungfrau. I personally don't think more than 4 nights are warranted, and would add an extra night to Zermatt. In Zermatt, we stayed at the Continental hotel, a short walk from the train station, on a quiet side street off the main road. Both hotels were reasonably priced by Swiss standards, included a basic breakfast, and were rustic in decor. Zermatt offers 3 different methods to explore the mountains, including the Gornergurt cogwheel railway or leaving from a different station, a series of cable cars, so I would recommend staying more than one night in Zermatt, if that is of interest. I hope you all enjoy your travels.
If it is in your price range, the Hotel Alex is around the back of the train station. Has a pool and sauna, and still offers half board (breakfast and dinner). Zermatt has a circulating free bus to the other lifts (Sunnegga underground funicular and Matterhorn Express gondola). The Gornergratbahn is across the street from the train station.
Otherwise, there are a ton of hotels in Zermatt, so just find one in your price range that is within a 5 to 10 minute walk of the train station.
Geneva you could definitely cut to 1 night unless there is something of particular interest to you.
4 nights in LAUTERBRUNNEN, (note spelling) should be good.
PS, Not that I belong to the spelling police, but if you search for a train on the SBB trip planner to go to Lauderbrennen, you won't get anywhere.
In Lauterbrunnen, IMO, it's best to get up out of the valley floor and on top of the plateau above. There it is sunnier, some villages are car free, and things are less strung out down the line of the valley and more compactly arranged in cute villages.
WENGEN is just a few minutes up the hill from the Lauterbrunnen train station by frequent cog railway. It is centrally located in the local transit network of various cog railways and lifts that you'll be using to tour around. It has a bakery, supermarket, a few restaurants, a public pool, insane views of both the valley and the mountains, little walking trails through the woods and pastures to scenic spots.
There are hotels available through the usual booking portals. There are also a lot of chalet style apartments because the area is a winter ski destination. Many of those can be booked direct with the tourist office Some can't be found elsewhere. It's nice to be able to cook for yourself in Switzerland as grocery prices are fairly normal but restaurants are quite pricey.
Here is a list of Wengen apartments for rent sort cheaper to more expensive.
If you go the apartment route, look for something fairly close to the town center - it's the mountains so outlying can be up/down hills.
have a great trip :)
Thank you. For some reason I can’t get English on the apartment site
